They also offered a day sightseeing tour of New Delhi and Old Delhi – which was a deliciously multi-layered experience of moving from Mughal grandeur, to British colonial splendour, on to modern-day India, all in the span of just one day.

Start in Old Delhi where every street corner is a whiff of street food and rickshaw noise. The UNESCO World Heritage Red Fort is a powerful manifestation of Mughal power, and nearby Jama Masjid, one of the largest mosques in the country, welcomes you with its beautiful architecture and spirituality. Take a rickshaw ride through the Chandni Chowk bazaar, which combines the chaos and character you would expect of India’s street shopping.

Now to New Delhi, the new capital of India, drawn by British architect Edwin Lutyens. Visit India Gate, a war memorial dedicated to Indian soldiers, Rashtrapati Bhavan (the Presidential Residence), and wide avenues all featuring distinctly British architecture. Take a visit to Humayun’s Tomb, another UNESCO site, and the flower-like Lotus Temple representing unity and peace, followed by another UNESCO landmark, the Qutub Minar, the tallest brick minaret in the world.

End your day at Connaught Place, a part of New Delhi that is dominated by modern shops and eateries, where you can complete your tour of the city with delightful food and souvenirs. Delhi is a city where old and new coexist in perfect harmony.
